ALPINE HAY:
A bit of history: for more than 2000 years, the health-promoting effects of hay have been known. The first written mention of hay baths dates back to 1803 - at that time it was mainly a speciality of the Schlern Plateau.
Life in the South Tyrolean mountains was hard. So that there would be enough fodder for the cattle for the whole winter, farmers would gather every strand on the alpine pastures and steep slopes and take the hay to a hut. After the strenuous work they would spend the night in the barn. And soon the farmers realised that sleeping in the hay was particularly refreshing and that all the fatigue of haymaking the next morning had vanished.
Hay not only had a regenerative effect, but also a health effect, for example in the case of rheumatic disorders or arthrosis.
South Tyrolean hay today is still as good as it used to be. Because only hay from high mountain pastures, where a multitude of alpine and aromatic herbs grow, can bear this name: it is a quality product, during the production and marketing of which very strict guidelines must be observed. This is not only good for those who bathe in hay, but also promotes traditional alpine pasture cultivation and thus contributes to the preservation of the alpine landscape.
Strict criteria guarantee the highest quality: harvesting hay in the South Tyrolean high mountains is very expensive. Not only because of the often inaccessible location of the alpine pastures, but also because of the strict quality criteria that the members of the 'Sudtiroler Bergwiesenheu coop.rl' must meet. These include:
the hay comes exclusively from alpine pastures located at an altitude of more than 1700 metres above sea level and furthermore at least 150 metres away from public roads.
Meadows must be cultivated according to ecological criteria and must not be treated with mineral fertilisers or herbicides.
Only areas with more than 40 different plant species per 50 square metres are used. This ensures the presence of a variety of substances, such as essential oils, which form the basis of the hay bath's effectiveness.
It is forbidden to treat the hay with fungicides, preservatives or similar.
