Soruka, a line of super cool bags, made with scraps of recovered leather, was created precisely to transform waste into articles that are useful to people and pleasant to wear, giving them a new value and at the same time helping to reduce the environmental impact of waste leather. The Soruka collection is designed in a timeless style, made to survive seasonal trends.
Each piece is UNIQUE and UNREPEATABLE and is handmade by artisans in Calcutta and Delhi, coordinated by Original Arts, a small Spanish company that has always worked in the distribution of handcrafted, ethical and fair trade products.
Every year the Indian leather industry generates an enormous amount of waste: clippings, failed batches or rejected by customers and unsold stock. A part of this waste is burned in traditional ovens, generating a thick blanket of smoke which contributes to polluting the atmosphere, endangering the health of those who live nearby. Another part of the waste is thrown into more or less legal landfills, where it will continue to pollute the subsoil for decades before decomposing. Soruka aims to counter this phenomenon.
All of the artisans who work for Soruka are trained adults over the age of 18, who receive superior fair trade wages. Their goal is to be a zero waste company and therefore they try to use every leftover material. With great effort and joy, the craftsmen select the right cut and colors to transform waste into a unique piece of art.
