Organic cotton refers to cotton that comes from non-genetically modified plants and is cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals such as fertilisers or pesticides, but only natural products. Its production also promotes and enhances biodiversity and biological cycles in cotton plantations that must meet the requirements imposed by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).
The objective of GOTS is to establish at the international level the requirements that textiles must have in order to obtain 'organic' status. This concerns both the production, harvesting and processing process. Generally speaking, we can state that the production of organic cotton involves: the use of fertilisers of animal and vegetable origin; the elimination of parasites by using antagonistic insects; the removal of weeds with tractors, hoes or by hand; the exclusive use of seeds resulting from at least four germinations in the absence of chemical treatments.
